Yahoo YUI hosting javascript!

OK I’m a few days late with this one. But Yahoo has announced that they will be hosting all current and subsequent versions of their YUI javascript library, for developers to use in applications, free of charge.
Why is this a big deal? Well, let’s take a look at some bandwidth stats for slideshare. 12.7% of our hits, and a monstrous 40% of our consumed bandwidth, are js files!
SlideShare don’t happen to use YUI (we use prototype and scriptaculous). But if we did, we would snap this up! Yahoo is effectively giving one more piece of distributed infrastructure to entrepreneurs looking to bootstrap a web startup. This is really generous of them.
Thanks, yahoo!

It’s even better than this. It means that if someone visit your site after visting Yahoo or someone that uses YUI, the download time is reduced to zero! You will already have the lib in your cache. I’ve even suggested it a year ago when they talked about optimization. YUI is the js lib with better usability and compatibility, now it is the quickiest to download. If you don’t have very specific requirements, I see no reason to user any other framework.

So the only question left is: what are the terms of service like. Do they allow you to run a for-profit business using the YUI code?

    The annoucement is nice!
But, Jonathan I just checked slideshare and seems like you can reduce your bandwidth usage by implementing proper caching “through” the server.
    I’ll send you an email.
